Stocks in the United States closed mixed at the end of trading on Monday, as indices were accompanied to the upside, and gains were recorded in the sectors of health services, technology and public institutions. On the other hand, losses were recorded in the basic materials, industries and communications sectors, as the indicators led down.
At the end of trading in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down at 0.36%, while the S&P 500 fell by 0.08% and the Nasdaq rose by 0.49%.
The biggest gainers of the day on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Group (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 1.22% or 3.05 points and traded at 253.84 at the close. On the other hand, Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) share increased at 1.06% or 2.65 points to end at 252.57, while American Express Corporation (NYSE:AXP) share increased 0.58% or 0.95 points to 165.95 in late trade.
As for the weakest performers at the end of trading today, the share of Merck & Co. (NYSE:MRK) closed down at 1.78% or 1.32 points and traded at 72.79 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) stock fell 1.76% or 4.30 points to 239.72 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) stock fell 1.59% or 1.12 points to 69.25.
On the other hand, the best performer in the S&P 500 was Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB), which rose by 38.33% to 395.82, Lilly, Eli & Co. (NYSE:LLY) also continued to rise at 10.15. % and closed at 222.53 levels, as well as Cardinal Health Inc (NYSE:CAH) share, which inclined towards 4.15% and ended its trading at 58.91.
Among the worst performers today were United Rentals Inc (NYSE:URI), which fell by 4.87% to close at 315.91, Progressive Corp (NYSE:PGR), which lost 3.96% to 96.39 and Nektar Therapeutics. (NASDAQ:NKTR), which weakened by 3.39% and closed at 16.55 today’s session on the stock exchange.
On the other hand, the best performance in the Nasdaq index was EXFO Inc (NASDAQ:EXFO), which rose by 60.27% to a price of 5.93, Nextdecade Corp (NASDAQ:NEXT) was the other, and it continued to rise at 42.62% and closed at 3.48 levels. Also, the share of Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) rose by 38.33% and ended its trading at 395.82.
Among the worst performers today were PDS Biotechnology Corp (NASDAQ:PDSB), which fell 26.53% to close at 9.390, Hookipa Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:HOOK), which lost 24.32% to 12.76 and MoSys (NASDAQ:MOSY), which weakened by 22.28% and closed at 7,080 today’s session on the stock exchange.
The number of shares that gained the most exceeded the number of shares that closed lower, trading on the New York Stock Exchange with 1792 compared to 1398, while 124 remained unchanged. As for the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2215 of the shares strengthened its position and 1163 fell, while 108 of the shares maintained their value.

Shares of American Express Corporation (NYSE:AXP) climbed to an all-time high, rising 0.58% or 0.95 to 165.95. EXFO Inc (NASDAQ:EXFO) stock climbed to a record high in 3 years, and it added 60.27% or 2.23 points to a price of 5.93. Shares of Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) climbed to a record high, adding 38.33% or 109.68 points to a price of 395.82.
500 volatility index, which measures the implied standard deviation of options on the S&P 500 index traded unchanged by 0.00% and closed at 16.42 by hitting a record high in a month.
Gold futures contracts for August delivery rose 0.52% or 9.80 and closed at $1901.80 per ounce. As for other commodities, the WTI crude oil futures contract for July delivery fell 0.57% or 0.40 and reached a price of $69.22 a barrel, while the August contract for Brent oil futures declined by 0.60% or 0.43 points, and closed at $71.46 a barrel.
The EUR/USD pair added 0.21% and traded at 1.2191 levels, while the USD/JPY continued its decline towards 0.20% and reached 109.27 levels.
The dollar index contracts were trading down 0.18% at the level of 89.972.
